Our Winery, the right mix of Tradition and Innovation.

It was in 1933 that Luigi founded his winery in the countryside of the small village of Castel San Pietro Terme.

Castel San Pietro Terme, a city with a strong tourist-spa appeal, is located at the foot of the green hills of Bologna on the border between Emilia and Romagna.

 Castel San Pietro Terme is certified “Cittàslow” (“Slowcity”), distinguishing itself for the high quality of life and for the many services available to citizens and visitors. The  spagolfing, mountain biking or sunbathing in the green Lungo Sillaro park are among the most popular activities with visitors. Built above traces of the original Roman and Medieval layout, the historic city centre has a lovely 17th-18th century appearance characterised by traditional porticoes, a feature shared with nearby Bologna. The symbol of the city is the Cassero built in 1199, the year when the city was founded, and boasting a recently-restored theatre.
Among the most admired monuments are Santuario del Crocifisso in the main square and the nearby bell tower boasting 55 bells, a unique feature in Europe.

The varied type of soil present in our lands guarantee a very broad range of wines while innovative viticulture practices and wine-making techniques allow high quality standards.

In our vineyards we apply with great attention all the principles of Integrated and Sustainable Agricolture. We use ecologically sustainable agricultural techniques that are compatible with the protection of the natural environment, completely glyphosate free. Furthermore, we have a water treatment station that permit us to reduce the water wastage.

The Winery

Our Winery, the right mix of Tradition and Innovation

Today, the original building of that quaint little winery and homestead still remains, but it is now surrounded by 140 hectare of vineyards and the environmentally-friendly site of our beautiful state-of-the-art winery.   The project, completed during 2011, was made using natural environment friendly materials and covered with solar panels capable of supplying nearly the 90% of the entire energy needs of our facilities.

In the east block there are placed the functions of representation and reception.

 A beautiful Show-room  with our best wines exposed is used as our wine shop but also as place where takes place our Company events during the year.

Instead in the west area of the building are placed the commercial and administrative functions, while the truncated-cone tower hosts a guests flat and on the top a meeting room with panoramic views.

Quality control, research and development

In the west block is located our internal laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, capable of carrying out in-depth analyzes.

  • Chemical-organoleptic analysis and,
  • Microbiological analysis

Every single activity of our company is managed by procedures, especially those concerning production, to allow at any time, a complete traceability and control, from the vineyards to the end product. The selection and evaluation of each supplier is measured on its ability to provide products and services that comply with the company quality standards. All products are subject to a strict sanitary control by our laboratory before their introduction into the production line. The accuracy of the analytical results of the laboratory is ensured by a permanent comparison with other external laboratories, certified internationally.

Cantine Sgarzi Luigi’s production process starts from an excellent raw material. Our process is the result of innovation that completely respects the rules of great winemaking traditions. The winery boasts cutting-edge machinery that places the best technology available in the hands of the company’s oenologist so that we may extract the very best that each grape is capable of giving. Several cold-storage facility and the best vinification technology guarantee a continuous and flexible production that is always geared towards quality.

The Barrique Cellar

The basement is entirely dedicated to the long-term aging.

Our barrique cellar contains barriques and tonaux made with oak wood.

Here, the original existing flavours and fragrances of our red wines are just refined and enhanced.

The Bottling Line

We have a flexible bottling line with a excellent production efficiency. This line allows us to bottling different capacities from 187 ml to 1500 ml with different shapes.
